The Fountain of Tales

Here and there, in a land no one knows where or when, in a place that doesn’t exist, there was an enchanted square. In the very middle stood a magical fountain with jets and dancing waters. Opposite, there was a school, surrounded by a small garden with two little trees and eight flowerpots. Above the square, the church with its bell tower dominated the scene.

The Arcobaleno ice-cream parlour, near the fountain, was the children’s favourite spot. Their ice creams, served in spectacular fashion, flew between the little tables, creating a lively to-and-fro.

Whenever a child passed by the fountain, the drops of water magically turned into words and, in turn, into tales. These came to life, accompanied by a melody that filled the air.

One afternoon, after school, a group of children gathered in the square. After enjoying a gelato al volo, they began to play around the magical fountain. All of a sudden, creating an enchanted atmosphere, the words rose from the water into the air: Once upon a time… and so the tale began. Guided by the magic words of the fountain, the children lived out an incredible adventure.

Amid jets of every shape and colour, they were carried off to a distant land, a small kingdom that seemed peaceful enough: the Kingdom of the Sun. A magical land where it was always summer and sunflowers grew all year round, until they towered like giants.

While the children, for their amusement, were roaming the fantastical kingdom, something truly incredible and altogether perilous happened. In one plantation first, and then in all the others after it, the sunflowers began to grow and grow, turning into terrifying dragons.

The corolla of the flowers turned over, taking the shape of a head with two bright, bulging lanterns for eyes, and a beak that looked like a hook. The yellow petals lengthened, transforming into a braided mane from which they drew their strength. The green stem swelled enormously, forming the body of the dragons.

Suddenly, and all together, the dragons began to march towards the castle and the city around it.

Their steps were majestic and rang out like thunder; their fiery footprints sparkled with every colour. The dragons were imposing but, above all, wicked; their intent was plain: to lay waste to the kingdom and seize it.

The frightened children at once began to run for all they were worth to warn the inhabitants, but along the way, by a spell, they were transformed into little warriors — dressed in golden armour, with helmets crowned by rainbow-coloured feathers, and fiery swords in their hands. So transformed, there was nothing for it but to fight the wicked dragons and save the Kingdom of the Sun.

They began to advance slowly and courageously towards the dragons, who, however, did not falter in their march. Despite their determination, the little warriors did not know how to stop them. The monsters were drawing closer and closer, and soon they would overtake them, when all at once the clouds on the horizon parted and there appeared a champion on a winged horse. In the blink of an eye he took command of the brave little warriors, his drawn sword blazing like the sun.

The undertaking was perilous, but now they were ready for battle! They followed the Knight, who, with cunning and magical power, led them to attack the wicked dragons.

The inhabitants of the kingdom who had rushed to the aid of the little heroes, stood still like incredulous spectators before these courageous children, who, with the mysterious knight, in a storm of fire and sparks, were beating back the monstrous dragons. As they retreated, the dragons began to shrink, and their appearance changed into that of the bright sunflowers everyone knew and loved.

It was the Kingdom of the Sun once more, and everything had returned to being just as it ought to be.

The flaming swords went out, and the children turned towards the townspeople of the kingdom, who applauded them and celebrated with songs and dances. All together they shouted:

“Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray! For the Paladin of the Sun and his brave little companions!”

And so peace returned to the Kingdom of the Sun. Bidding farewell with a bow, the knight and the winged horse set off once more towards the horizon from which they had come. At sunset, the children found themselves, by magic, in the enchanted square in front of the Fountain of Tales.

An endless wonder, because from then on, thanks to the magic words, every time the children stopped there after school, they lived out a new and fantastical adventure.
